Dr. Simon Pete Worden is a pioneering figure in space exploration, combining decades of military leadership and innovative civilian space efforts. As a retired Brigadier General in the U.S. Air Force, he was instrumental in shaping the military’s space strategy, holding senior roles at U.S. Space Command and Air Force Space Command. His career saw him managing crucial programs like the Space Defense Operations Center at Cheyenne Mountain and contributing to the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. His strategic expertise helped elevate the U.S. military’s approach to space and missile defense. Following his military career, Worden took on the role of Director at NASA’s Ames Research Center, where he became a driving force for faster, more agile space exploration projects. His tenure at Ames saw the rise of public-private partnerships, helping to usher in the NewSpace era. Worden’s bold vision has made him one of the most respected figures in space exploration, often referred to as the "godfather of NewSpace." Today, as Chairman of the Breakthrough Prize Foundation and Executive Director of the Breakthrough Initiatives, Worden is focused on projects that aim to answer the question, "Are we alone?" He leads initiatives like Breakthrough Starshot, which aspires to send the first interstellar probe within a generation. Worden has been a supporter of Spaceport Norway since its inception in 2017, something we are immensely proud of. His endorsement and involvement have helped elevate Spaceport Norway’s mission of fostering innovation and international cooperation in the space industry. His continued support highlights his commitment to nurturing the next generation of space explorers.
